Shingle & Slate Roofing
Shingle & Slate Roofing in Brooklyn
GAF Timberline architectural shingles, plus slate repair and matching for the mansards and landmark blocks that deserve it.
Brooklyn's pitched roofs are mostly mansards, front slopes and rear extensions rather than the big open gables you see in the suburbs. That means more edges, more valleys, more transitions and more places to get the detail wrong — and it's why the quality difference between two shingle jobs on the same street can be enormous even though both look fine from the sidewalk.
Our default is GAF Timberline HDZ: a laminated architectural shingle with a strong wind rating, a real manufacturer warranty, and a dimensional shadow line that suits the borough's housing far better than a flat three-tab. Where a home still has original slate worth preserving, we repair and match rather than pushing you to strip it.

Worth knowing
Ventilation is half of a shingle roof's life
Shingles fail from the underside more often than people expect. An attic with no intake at the soffit and no exhaust at the ridge turns into an oven in July, cooks the asphalt from beneath, and shortens the roof's life by years. In winter the same trapped warm air melts snow at the top of the roof, which refreezes at the cold eave and forms ice dams.
So when we quote a shingle roof, we look in the attic. Balancing intake and exhaust usually costs a few hundred dollars on a job of this size and it's one of the highest return decisions on the whole estimate. Most manufacturer warranties also require adequate ventilation — without it, the coverage you paid for may not apply.

Straight answers
Shingle & Slate Roofing — your questions
How long do architectural shingles last?
Properly installed and properly ventilated, 25 to 30 years in the New York climate. The manufacturer's rated life assumes correct installation and ventilation, which is why those two things matter more than which premium shingle you pick.
Can you match my existing shingles for a partial repair?
Often yes, if we know the manufacturer and line. Bear in mind that new shingles next to a fifteen-year-old roof will show a color difference for a while as the new ones weather in. On a visible front slope we'll tell you when that difference will bother you.
Do you repair slate roofs or only replace them?
We repair. Slate that's still in good condition can last a century, and losing a few pieces to a storm is not a reason to strip a roof. We source matching slate where we can and replace individual pieces with proper hooks or copper nails.
What color shingle should I choose?
Charcoal and weathered wood are the safest choices on most Brooklyn blocks and they hide granule loss and staining better than lighter colors. Lighter shades reflect slightly more heat but show algae streaking sooner. We'll bring physical samples and hold them against your brick or trim.
Are you a certified GAF installer?
We install GAF systems to the manufacturer's specification, including their underlayment, starter and ridge cap components, which is what their warranties require. Ask us about the specific warranty level available for your job when we quote it.
